His rank. It is possible that the murderer acted out of fear of being randomly selected for future execution, but it is more likely that the act was spurred on by the incentives we were given. As prince, it is likely that Corrin's incentive would have benefited his entire realm, and therefore benefited Niles as well, giving him plenty of reason to act as a false alibi.
