[ Maybe you were going about your business and blacked out, maybe you were dead. Either way, when you come to, you are in what looks like the entrance hall to a school, except for the very well secured front door. Before you can really get your bearings, a voice rings out on an the intercom. ]

Welcome, kiddos! —How does that sound? 'Kiddos'? Too daddy kink? Eh, let's go with it for now. Anyway, welcome to a once-in-a-lifetime chance at romance and passion, with fabulous prizes! Find love beyond the boundaries of time and space! Original concept, do not steal.

Pick up your tablets and get settled in! A little later today, we'll have our first heart-pounding get-to-know-you event!

—Oh, also, no violence allowed! I know some of you kids are into the murder thing, but that's not the kind of game we're running here.

[ In fact, there are several boxes of electronic tablets around the room. When you pick one up, it displays the gameplay and rules.]

Aah. Then it won't happen at all, probably.

No internet unless the situation seriously changes where I came from.

[huh! perhaps now is the time to ask]

Is that situation the reason for the fluffy outfit?

Yeahhh, the situation is the reason for pretty much all of it, to be honest. [just. gestures at self.] I've never really, like, talked about this? But it's not a secret, I just. Haven't met anyone who'd get it.

[purrtagonist]

Ah. . .

[his expression softens, and he shifts from one foot to the next]

. . . do you mind if I ask?

[they LITERALLY just met, so of course Akira isn't going to like, pry too much. but he's never minded listening to what other people had to say, so long as they were comfortable saying it]

I don't mind. But it's okay if you don't wanna know, given the whole we just met thing.

[purrtagonist]

Trust me, that's not a problem on my end.

[waves a hand!]

Okay. I'll take your word for it. Uhm, how to word this... I went to the past. The way distant past. But rather than going there, I woke up in a corpse rather than my own body.

[purrtagonist]

[. . . WELL THEN]

That's. . .

Awkward?

Yeah, that's one word for it. So this [presses his hand to his chest] is Shut Hell, and I'm Sudoh. We actually look pretty similar, so she's probably my ancestor or something? But she's in here too, so if I suddenly start acting way different it's probably her.

[purrtagonist]

Should I reintroduce myself to her when the time comes?

[dismemberthename]

If you'd like. We switch back and forth, so she wouldn't know you. But we usually only switch when something terrible happens, so hopefully it's unlikely you'll meet her.

[purrtagonist]

If I ever meet her, I'll try to make a good first impression.

Why did you travel to the past, though?

[dismemberthename]

It was an accident, the first time. I got strongarmed into bringing a classmate home after a party, and she played an instrument I'd made, and I woke up in this body. A lot happened, but I did wake up in my own body again later. Except Suzuki-san was gone like she'd never existed, and the past had changed so an entire written language had disappeared from history. So I went back to try and fix things.

[purrtagonist]

[ah. . . huh]

Did you get caught up in trying to fix the timeline?

[dismemberthename]

[shrugs] It's not quite like that. I can't go back whenever I want. So I just... have to do my best, and hope that it works out? It's been over a year now, since I was in my own body. There's no guarantee I'll wake up right from when I left off, if I ever go back. I could be dead, or in a coma. So... if I ever go back, I may not get another chance.

[purrtagonist]

. . . I see.

That must be really tough.

[dismemberthename]

[shrugs]

It is what it is.

Yeah.

[a pause. a considering pause]

What's the saying, though? What doesn't kill you makes you stronger?

[dismemberthename]

Well, I'm definitely stronger than I was!

[purrtagonist]

[that gets a light laugh from Akira]

There are lots of those. I have people who really care about me, now. Even though I'm some weirdo from a place they've never heard of.

[purrtagonist]

[ah. . . you know, he gets that. but what was he saying about bonds earlier?]
