The wishes would actually have hellish consequences to punish the wisher for toying with fate. For example, wishing for someone to return from the dead would result in an animated, decaying corpse knocking at your door.

I was HOPING it wouldn't be. There's wish-granting demons in my world, and they only really mess with wishes if they're difficult to do. Making a toothpick isn't hard at all, so they would be like 'fine whatever' or something.
