I never knew Mom.

There's not much to say, really. She's just gone. Maybe dead, maybe she just abandoned us, who knows. Dad adopted us right away, so it's never like I was without a family or anything. But...

[He sighs.]

My birthday was about a month ago, on the 27th of December. Er, that's the day it was in my world at least. And on that day, someone I know told me and Yukio a story about our mom. Before then, I never really thought about her. It's kinda hard to miss someone you don't know. But since then, I've been thinking about her. About what she was like, about if she loved us and was sad to leave us. Stuff like that.

[nods, cocking her head]

The person who told you the story, they didn't know what happened to her either?

She was like eight when it happened. She said she never saw Mom again after that.

But even if she was just a kid at the time, seems like she could at least give you an idea on some things about your mom. Like, how happy she seemed around you guys and stuff.

I'm pretty sure that happened way before we were born. Shura's almost thirty now.

[shakes her head]

Either way... You're a good guy. If she loved anybody she'd've loved you, for sure.

...yeah. I like to think so too.

[He hesitates, and then:]

You know, I was always afraid of finding out more about her. Like, maybe she won't actually be a good person, or something bad happened that will hurt. Sometimes I think it's better not knowing, you know?

Yeah... A photo can't disappoint you, but a person can.

[looks over at him, soft]

...How d'you feel learnin' what you did this time?

It was nice to learn that she was a good person. Shura's a bit of a jackass, she's one to be really critical of anyone's faults. So the fact that she couldn't think of anything bad to say about my mom means that Mom was a good person.

There you go. Should be able to figure out enough about the rest from just that.

Yeah, that...would be nice.

[He smiles a little, but then that frown comes back.]

I wish dad would've told me about her before he died though. He must've had so many stories, why wouldn't he at least share the good ones?

Maybe it hurt too much or...whatever. Just 'cause they're old don't mean that adults're perfect.

You're probably right, yeah. Dad had a lot of faults. I guess I always overlooked them since he's my dad and all.

[crosses her arms, trying to work out how to word what she's trying to convey]

I mean... I ain't sayin' you should feel bad about your old man. Just...focusin' in on what-ifs'll drive you nuts. Just concentrate on what you know, like how your parents cared about you. The details ain't really all that important when it comes down to it, are they?

[That's been his thought too, for the most part. Why ask 'what if' when you'll never have that answer? It seems maddening to him, mostly. The answer doesn't really matter if you have no way to get that answer, right?]

I guess not. They're both dead and gone anyway. What she was like is nice to think about, but it doesn't really change anything.

...You think you could ever meet her? I mean, you do stuff with spirits and whatever, right?

[He pauses there, because he never really considered that before.]

...maybe. I mean, if she didn't go to heaven, then I guess that's possible.

Even if she did, there's no like...conferences or vacations or nothin'?

I'm pretty sure once you go to heaven you're stuck there. And I can't get to heaven, I don't think.

That's shitty. It's supposed to be a reward, but instead it sounds like jail.

--Oh, what about a letter? They got celestial email or somethin'?

[He considers that, and his spirit actually lightens up a bit.]

Yeah...a letter might work. I bet I could write one to dad too.

[seeing him brighten she cheers a bit as well, smiling]
