Is it a plant or something? That sounds like a fancy scientific plant name.

Indeed, it's a plant. You may have heard of it as eggplant. For some reason I'm not aware of, the English of the place I come from is rather different to the English most people use.

['Aubergine' is far more interesting of a word than 'eggplant'. It isn't even shaped like an egg. But yeah, McGonagall isn't really aware how British English's words came from]

Maybe different countries? I'm Japanese, but the English they taught us in school is American English.
